BUTCH & harold, launched by sisters Michele and Ariane Gold in 2007, has a line of distinctive wall decals that are made in the USA. These peel and stick products decorate without damage, and can be used over and over again. CBT sat down with Michele to learn more about BUTCH & harold’s creative products, and why parents and kids love them.
CBT: What are some of your most popular products?
Michele: We are best known for our Stickr frames picture frames. You place your photo behind the frame and stick it to the wall. We have them in several styles and colors. Our most popular is the set of eight frames in black, and the second most popular is the multi-color. Our Stickr sweet is a candy themed set for a younger demographic. It includes dry erase notes and decorative candy stickers so the wall scape extends beyond the frames. We also have Stickr pockets that come three to a pack with a dry erase marker. They are very functional and help busy moms unclutter a desk or kitchen counter. They hold lots of different things like photos, grocery lists, tickets, and notes. Moms often organize the pockets by child. We recently introduced Stickr banners in three styles—congratulations, happy birthday and one with letters that spell out LOL, OMG and BFF. These are great for girls. We also have Stickr corners for hanging kids’ artwork on the walls.
CBT: Why did you develop these products?
Michele: My sister and I had been using decals to decorate our babies’ rooms. We wanted to create something for tweens and teens that would allow them to personalize their space. It is very common for kids to put up pictures, whether they are of Justin Bieber or their BFF. Our products let them to do that in a way that allows parents to walk into the room and not freak out at what is going on with the walls. We created the corners because we were using a lot of scotch tape, which isn’t very paint friendly, to hang our kids’ artwork. We knew this was a universal problem, and we wanted a way to display artwork that was reusable and wouldn’t harm walls.
CBT: When will you be expanding the line?
Michele: We have a lot of exciting stuff in the works. We’ll be introducing a new product at the Atlanta Gift Show in January and NY NOW in February.
CBT: Where can people buy your products?
Michele: Our entire line is for sale on our website. Retail stores throughout the US also carry a selection of our products. Bed, Bath & Beyond, as an example, sells some styles of our Stickr frames. We have a store locator on our website.
CBT: Why did you start your company?
Michele: My previous career was in the world of Broadway theater. I worked for Disney Theatrical, on shows like the Lion King, and for several producers, and I got laid off. It turned out to be an opportunity for me to start a company and never be at the mercy of anyone else again.
CBT: How is it, running your own business?
Michele: We are having a lot of fun. I was at a trade show in New York at the Javits Center and my husband and kids were bowling nearby. My husband texted me that Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise were bowling right beside them. Rachel (Florio-Urso) was at the show, too. She grabbed a pack of Stickr frames, ran to the bowling alley and handed a package to Katie for Suri. I’d like to think that Katie couldn’t wait to get home and put them up on Suri’s wall!
